What is it?

The Sustainability Context Canvas helps product professionals identify the relevant factors influencing their product's sustainability character. The segments are based on the 🖼️ Green PO Framework

Which problem does it solve?

Sustainability is a broad field with various layers. Consequently, people are either lost by the complexity or forget important aspects. The Sustainability Context Canvas captures and organises all relevant information.

Who should be involved?

The template can be used by a single person, a team, or a cross-functional group.

Ideally, product, sales, sustainability, strategy, legal, HR, and finance representatives are involved.

External experts about the market, legislation, or sustainability could contribute to get a complete and accurate picture.

How does it work?

Start to define the product as this defines the scope of the other dimensions.

If done alone, fill out each segment, including KPIs that matter (if there are any).

If done as a group, there are various options:

  1. Everyone does the complete canvas individually, and results are shared and discussed at the end.

  2. The group starts with one segment. Everyone fills out the segment individually, and results are shared and discussed before moving to the next segment.

  3. The group splits up into up to five sub-groups. The sub-groups go from segment to segment and enrich the results created by the previous group.

What to be cautious about?

Define your desired level of accuracy. Usually, the social system and ecological system segments can only be filled correctly with subject-matter expertise. Make sure that the competencies of the group filling out the canvas match your desired level of accuracy.
